NBDB wants Ibanag books on children published

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan – Expect a series of books for Ybanag children next after the National Book Development Board subjected 20 Ibanag writers to a two-day training here as part of the government’s efforts to propagate the language.

Leonor Reyes, NBDB project development officer said that while there are potential local writers in areas like Cagayan Valley, majority of them lack the necessary assistance to pursue their dreams of hitting it big in the national and international markets.

Cagayan Valley is one of the earliest regions in the country eyed by NBDB for vernacular children’s book publication.

However, for the Cagayan Valley leg, only Ibanag had been identified for production and promotion.

“We have Filipino writers who have hit it big in the world market. Most of their published works deal with their Filipino roots,” Reyes said.

Local writers usually face the problem of where to publish their works that its absence discourages them from pursuing the art form.

However, the group from the four provinces of the region and three cities noted that from among the languages of Cagayan Valley, only Ilocano have fully reached maturity as manifested by the presence of the Gumil- Cagayan.

A basic lecture and workshop on the basics of writing a simple script for children were provided which culminated in the production of an individual story from the participants.

Despite the full implementation of the K to 12 program of the government where the mother tongue based education is a highlight, Ybanag children has yet to read full blown Ibanag books three years after the program was launched. Reyes assured the local Ybanag and Iloco writers of NBDB support from conceptualization of the story until its publication and promotions.

“We can conduct a book fair on books for Ibanag children next year once all these stories will see publication, “ she said. In a related news, Golden Press in Tuguegarao has been eyed by NBDB as a potential partner In the publication of local books. Benjie S. De Yro/TNF
