4 Cagayan Valley provinces under Signal No. 1 as Jolina gains strength

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- More provinces were placed under storm signal number 1 as tropical Depression Jolina slightly intensified and continues to head towards Northern Luzon, the state weather bureau said.

In its weather bulletin issued 11 pm on Thursday, August 24, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration or PAGASA said Jolina has slightly intensified and will intensify further before its forecast landfall over Isabela-Aurora area.

The following areas were place under Storm Signal Number 1:

  • Cagayan
  • Isabela
  • Nueva Vizcaya
  • Quirino
  • Apayao
  • Kalinga
  • Mountain Province
  • Ifugao
  • and Northern Aurora

PAGASA said the tropical depression was last located 430 km East Southeast of Casiguran, Aurora and is moving at 17 kilometers per hour (kph).

Jolina has maximum winds of up to 55 kph and gustiness of up to 65 kph. Forecasts said the typhoon could reach its tropical storm category on landfall.

It is expected to cross over North Luzon and make landmass exit via Ilocos Norte. Exit at the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) is expected on Sunday, August 27.

PAGASA said possible flashfloods and landslides are possible in the path of Jolina.
