TUGUEGARAO CITY, PHILIPPINES- A high-ranking official of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) condemned the attacks of the communist guerrillas against the Maddela town police in Quirino on Saturday night, April 29.

In a statement, Major General Paul Atal, commander-in-chief of the 5th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army based in Gamu, Isabela, branded the New People Army (NPA) rebels as “communist criminals” for launching an attack on government police force that had killed one police officer on duty.

Atal heads one of the largest Army divisions in the country, covering regions of Cagayan Valley, Cordillera and Ilocos. His division is focused in battling decades-long insurgencies in the region.

“These Communist Criminals pretend to be pro-people and champion of social justice yet their action speak differently,” Atal said.

He said these “criminal acts” of the rebels is a manifestation that they “do not want peace, hinder the development of the communities and the people living in the countryside, and working only for their own selfish interest.”

“They deprived the community of law enforcement services that are badly needed by the people, such as the war on illegal drugs and the like,” Atal added.

The 86th Infantry Battalion of the 5th ID was among those who first responded when the firefight against NPA and Maddela police ensued on Saturday night. Northernforum.net
