BFAR fish landing center opens in Ballesteros, Cagayan

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) Region 02 opened a new Community Fish Landing Center (CFLC) in Ballesteros, Cagayan on Tuesday, September 12.

The P3-million building was completed under BFAR’s umbrella program called Targeted Action to Reduce Poverty and Generate Economic Transformation in the Fisheries Sector (TARGET) program.

In a press release on Facebook, BFAR said that the CFLC has facilities such as stainless steel fish stalls and chest freezers for fishermen to improve their local fishery sector and to “maintain the freshness of captured fish.”

The CFLC will also serve as fish repository, training facility, and a center of fish trade in the area, BFAR said.

The center will first be run by the local government of Ballesteros until its eventual turnover to local fisherfolk cooperative.

BFAR Regional Director Milagros C. Morales said in the release that the new center and its facilities will greatly help fishermen in lessening cases of post-harvest losses of fish.

BFAR said in the release that there are currently seven CFLCs in the region. They are aiming to build 27 CFLCs in Cagayan Valley. Northernforum.net
