Cagayan barangay chief arrested in drug bust

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- A 48-year old barangay captain in Enrile, Cagayan was arrested in a buy-bust operation Sunday night, August 13.

Chief Inspector Edwin Aragon of Enrile Police told the Northern Forum that Gilbert Callangan, barangay chairman of Centro 02 in the town, was caught in an operation conducted by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Region 2 and Enrile Police in the barangay’s junction at around 7pm.

Callangan was caught by authorities trying to sell drugs to PDEA agents acting as buyers. He was classified as a high-value target by Enrile Police.

Police retrieved from the suspect two sachets of suspected shabu and P1000 bill marked money.

Aragon said that Callangan surrendered to them last year in their “Oplan Double Barrel” operations but they had learned that the barangay chief continued his illegal operations, leading to the planned buy-bust.

Callangan, who is in his second term as barangay chair, is now under custody of PDEA Region 02 and will be facing charges in violation of RA 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. Northernforum.net
