Cagayan board approves creation of prov’l library consortium

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Learning institutions in Cagayan may soon share resources as Sangguniang Panlalawigan approved on final reading the creation of a provincial library consortium during the 67th Regular Session on Wednesday, December 13.

The ordinance sponsored by Vice Governor Melvin “Boy” Vargas Jr will tap the Cagayan Library Consortium (CLC) in gathering all institutions with functional libraries in Cagayan for possible access and sharing of resources subject to certain policies.

The CLC also aims “to share information in terms of technical and administrative aspect of library management.”

Aside from this, the CLC council will initiate programs, projects, and activities. The council is chaired by the Governor, vice chaired by the Vice Governor, with members as the Provincial Learning Resources Center head, mayors of different towns and city, librarians’ associations, and non-government organizations.

If signed by Governor Manuel Mamba, all libraries and related institutions will be mandated to affiliate and collaborate to form CLC guidelines and regulations.

On October, PLRC Head Librarian Michael Pinto said the consortium may allow access and sharing of local research and theses made by students and researchers in the province.

“Pag may consortium, puwedeng shared ang information among all the members [schools]… Wag na nating i-duplicate kung anong meron yung isa. Pag nabuo natin yung consortium, magshe share na lang. It’s a way para mas makatipid pa,” he said.

Meanwhile, ordinance states that the CLC “would improve” library services to Cagayano users, and that this will maintain “cooperation and coordination” among libraries in Cagayan.

The ordinance is co-sponsored by Third District Board Members Rosauro Resuello and Rodrigo De Asis.

Following legislative process, Governor Mamba has 15 days to either sign or veto the proposed ordinance. Northernforum.net
