Cagayan environment chief stresses need for forest watchers

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Cagayan’s Provincial Natural Resources and Environment Officer (PNREO) said there is a need to delegate forest guards in the province’s reforestation areas.

PNREO Head Robert Adap said designating two to three forest keepers per area will prevent cutting and burning of trees in reforestation areas.

“Parang kulang po ang presence natin sa field. Dapat sana meron kaming tao in every site,” Adap said.

“May nakatalaga na diyan na nakaplano but since hindi na-approve yung budget, what we did is mga remedial measures na lang,” he added.

On November, PNREO tapped bantay quarry checkers to plant trees in several areas in the province. A total of 4.144 hectares of land were covered in the said tree planting and maintenance activity.

During the activity, PNREO also discovered some burned trees in Enrile. Adap was unable to determine if the incident was accidental or intentional.

Also, Adap said they have “met problems” in the Nasipping, Gattaran reforestation area.

He said there were reported illegal cutting activities in the 2011-hectare area.

“May pagkukulang po tayo sa tao…These are the reasons kung bakit sana gusto natin magtalaga ng tao rin doon to undertake forest protection,” Adap added.

Yet, he assured the PNREO made “continuous interventions” to address such incidents. Recently, the provincial government with the help of local residents retrieved cut wood including a 1000-board feet Narra lumber, the PNREO chief said. .

Despite these, Adap said the provincial government continuously conducts its reforestation efforts.

“Tuluy-tuloy pa rin yan kasi hindi naman natin puwedeng iwanan yan. Once we plant a trees, kailangan niyan ang maintenance,” Adap said.

“I think the right term there is tree growing. Kailangan parang pagpapalaki ng bata yan [na] sundan mo hanggang sa paglaki,” he added. Northernforum.net
