Cagayan gov’t allots P2-million for VAWC, social welfare center

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- The Provincial Government of Cagayan has allotted P2 million for the refurbishing of a new two-storey building that will soon cater to social welfare needs.

Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer (PSWDO) Helen Donato told media on Monday, February 12, the funding covers additional construction and painting of the said building originally intended only as violence against women and children (VAWC) center.

The center is located in front of Land Transportation Office and beside Civil Service Commission at Barangay San Gabriel, this city.

Donato said the building will be a help center and recourse shelter for victims of VAWC. She added that the PSWDO has trained social workers who can handle their needs.

The center, Donato said, will operate through an interagency task force that includes the police, members of the academe, lawyers, and the National Bureau of Investigation.

Further, the center will have a dormitory where parents of children with disabilities can stay for training on proper care of their children.

“Gusto naming i-train ang mga parents na may mga anak na may kapansanan [at] hindi marunong mag-alaga. Kasi sometimes hindi natin maiwasan yung mga parents hindi marunong alagaan tulad ng mga follow-up na gagawin sa mga anak. Iyon ang gusto natin i-focus,” Donato said.

Aside from housing VAW victims and parents of CWDs, the dormitory will also be open for former rebels who want to surrender and return to the government’s care.

The PSWDO said the building will be completed and fully operational this year.

“Hopefully, we are crossing our finger [matapos na], para naman [magamit]. Hindi naman lang kasi VAW [ang iccater], meron din tayong [ibang sectors including that of] former rebels who [want to utilize the building].” Northernforum.net
