Cagayan gov’t, LGUs to identify ‘proper’ relocation sites

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- The Provincial Government of Cagayan is looking to work with local government units (LGUs) to identify “proper” relocation sites for people in usually flooded, low-lying areas.

“With supervision of MGB (Mines and Geosciences Bureau), we could now work with the municipalities for the identification of relocation sites,” Provincial Natural Resources and Environment Officer (PNREO) Robert Adap said on Monday, November 4.

Adap said proper relocation areas must be geohazard-free, adding that some towns have proposed areas which are flood prone or erosion prone.

“Hindi po kasi puwede na binabaha ka na eh andiyan ka pa rin…Binabaha na nga ginagawa mo pa siyang relocation sites,” he said.

The PNREO chief revealed that they have identified possible relocation sites for 26 out of 29 towns in Cagayan.

He said they are hoping to complete the identification of sites next year.

Adap said he encouraged municipal and city environment and natural resources officers to try to include identification of relocation sites in their Forest land Use Plan (FLUP).

Meanwhile, Adap said most existing sites “definitely” do not follow government policies.

“So ito yung pwede sana naming hima-himayin next year para sa ganoon makatugon kami ng tama [pagdating] sa proper relocation sites,” he said.

Yet, he assured the provincial government will assist LGUs in properly identifying relocation sites, as ordered by Governor Manuel Mamba.

The PNREO chief and subcapitol administrator said “a lot of studies” must be done before putting up relocation sites. Northernforum.net
