Cagayan quarry checkers, PNREO plant trees in over 4 hectares land

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- A total of 4.144 hectares of land were covered in a simultaneous planting and maintenance tree activity of Cagayan Provincial Natural Resources Office (PNREO) and ‘Bantay Quarry’ checkers.

The activity was conducted from Tuesday, November 7, to Friday, November 10. This was when some river quarry sites seized operations due to high water levels brought by heavy rains.

“When heavy rains occur and checkers cannot monitor river quarry operations [due to the high water levels in rivers], we utilize their services and tap them for tree planting projects,” PNREO Assistant Head Engineer Mario Hipolito said.

Checkers from Abulug to Santa Praxedes were able to plant 240 bamboo cuttings, equivalent to 8,800 square meters, in the sub-capitol in Bangag, Lal-lo.

Meanwhile, Baggao checkers team planted 1,349 narra seedlings, 600 gmelina, and 400 narra wildings in 3.12 ha of the Nassiping Reforestation area in Gattaran. They also did potting of 400 polybags.

In Santiago Tree Growing Project in Iguig, checkers were able to plant 300 bare root seedlings of Yemane.

Checkers also got rid of weeds surrounding mango trees in Liwan, Enrile. Foresters also reported dead mangoes covering more or less 5 ha in Liwan. Residents told foresters that a grass fire occurred a few months ago, killing the trees.

Some 925 trees, equivalent to two hectares, were also maintained through ring weeding at Simpatuyo, Santa Teresita. 90 seedlings composed of 65 bitaog and 25 gmelina were planted in 1,440 square meters land.

Checkers also pruned weed in 40 gmelina trees.

Hipolito said the seedlings were sourced from capitol’s nursery in Nassiping.

“We have to share the responsibility in protection and management, and development of our remaining forest areas. By doing tree planting, we could improve the forest cover so that we could [combat] climate change,” Hipolito said.

“If uulan pa, ipagpapatuloy pa namin ang pagtanim sa mga hindi pa natamnan na areas. We could again tap them [checkers] for the activity,” he added. Northernforum.net
