‘Callao Man’ visits Namunit Festival

SANTA TERESITA, Cagayan- “Callao Man” is here in Sta. Teresita for its first travel outside its home at the Cagayan Museum Historical and Research Center. It is the first town where the centerpiece of the exhibit will be shown.

The Callao Man is a fossilized 61 millimeter metatarsal remains discovered in Callao, Penablanca, Cagayan in 2007 by Armand Salvador Mijares, almost 35 years after foreign and local archaeologists turned Cagayan’s soil upside up during the Dupaya administration.

The metatarsal is a small bone from the end of the middle toe of the right foot and is believed to be 67,000 years old. Its replica is now the centerpiece of the exhibit called LAYAG ( Layuning Alagaan at Yumabong ang Kultura ng Cagayan) which aimed to showcase astounding beauty and significance of caves.

“This is the first of a series of exhibition that we will set up in the different municipal festivals in the province,” Lorie Decena Malbog, Museum official said.

LAYAG aims to highlight the universal value of Cagayan with the discovery of the Callao Man as support to the heritage and beauty of the province.

“We want to impart to locals as well as foreign tourists to take good care of these valuable heritage so he can pass it on to the next generation, “ Lorie Decena Malbog, museum official said. The exhibit will fold on the 28th of this month. -Northernforum.net
