TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- The Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) and the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) initiated a Coastal Cleanup Drive on September 19 in celebration of the this year’s National Coastal Cleanup Day and International Preservation of the Ozone Layer.

In a press release, CEZA said the cleanup covered the coastlines of Barangay Diora Zinungan to Barangay Centro, and Barangay San Vicente and Nangaramoan Beach, all in the town of Santa Ana.

The event was a joint effort and an information campaign on environmental protection and waste management of the Cagayan freeport.

CEZA and EMB were also joined by volunteers from the local government unit of Sta. Ana, Barangay San Vicente, Philippine National Police (PNP) Maritime, Philippine Navy, Philippine Coast Guard and private organizations like Sta. Ana Hotel, Restaurant and Resort Association (SAHARRA) and Eastern Hawaii Leisure and Resort Company Limited.

CEZA said about 300 volunteers helped in the gathering of tons of garbage along the coastlines.

“Members of the local media also attended the said activity, not just to cover the cleanup operations but to serve as the information arm to regularly apprise and educate the people on the global importance of maritime and aquatic resources protection,” the release stated.

“Specifically, CEZA intended to highlight from this activity the detrimental effects of irresponsible actions like indiscriminate throwing of garbage in the bodies of water, impacts of which could also resonate to problems like flooding and loss of marine resources, among others,” it added.

Coastal cleanup drives have been part of CEZA’s regular program at the Cagayan Freeport to showcase its advocacy for the ocean, recognizing that a “healthy ocean is not only good for the environment but also maintains teeming water resources and sustains the local’s ecotourism economy.” Northernforum.net
