CSU student commits suicide; police eyes depression

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- A 19-year old student of Cagayan State University (CSU) died in an apparent suicide due to depression, police said.

In a report, Tuguegarao city police said Rodolfo Urmanita, a native of Barangay Dugo in Camalaniugan town, was found lifeless in his rented room in Barangay Caritan Norte, this city.

In her statement to police, Urmanita’s landlady said she knocked the room of the victim around 8:40 pm on Tuesday, January 16, but no one was responding, prompting them to forcibly open the door.

The victim hanged himself at the door using a shoe lace, police said.

A notebook containing the victim’s diary was found in his room narrating his struggle within his families and the lack of support from his relatives.

Meanwhile, friends and relatives of Urmanito, whom they fondly called “Rod,” took to social media to lament the student’s death.

The administration of CSU also denied that Urmanita’s suicide could have been due to his unpaid school dues, saying it is a form “misinformation [being] peddled around.”

In a Facebook post, CSU Vice President for Administration Fr. Ranhilio Aquino said, “It is not true that he died under unfortunate circumstances because he could not pay his miscellaneous fees. Several students have enrolled on the basis of promissory notes only.”

Aquino added they’re set to release P50,000 as financial assistance to the family. Northernforum.net
