TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan – Senator Cynthia Villar said that while women has always been the ‘dominant force in agriculture,’ majority still belong to the poverty level.

“Twenty five percent of the world’s population are women farmers yet they are not aware of how powerful they are, “ Villar told a crowd of women.

The role of women farmers are significant, she added, citing reports from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organizations where the world is pressured to produce 70 percent more food for an increased world population by 2050.

Studies show that majority of small farmers and fishermen in the countryside belong to the most marginalized sector of Philippine society where women does the majority of the tasks.

“Small farmers in small family farms will be the future in food production in this country and not the corporate farms,” Villar, chair of the Senate committee on agriculture said.

Meanwhile, the legislator asked the women in the city to go into recycling of waste for added productivity. She cited the case of her home city where almost anything waste have been turned into marketable goods.

“Women have a lot to contribute to development given the proper opportunities such as the opportunity to learn new skills and use those to attain a level of financial independence,” she added.

The Senator was the city’s special guest during the celebration of Women’s Month in this city. She flew to Isabela an hour after an interview with the local media. -Northernforum.net
