DA: Cagayan Valley is bird flu-free

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- The Department of Agriculture (DA) in Cagayan Valley assured the public that Region 2 remains free from avian influenza, also known as bird flu.

Narciso Edillo, regional executive director, said despite this assurance, they are still implementing precautionary measures to bar possible entry of poultry and poultry products coming from the 7km radius bird flu-infected areas in Pampanga.

He said they intensified their monitoring and checkpoint activities especially in Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino to prevent the possible entry of poultry products, including eggs infected with bird flu in region 2 in collaboration with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the local government units (LGUs).

“Two additional checkpoint personnel are now detailed in Sta Fe, Nueva Vizcaya to conduct 24/7 checkpoint operation,” Edillo said.

He asked the public to remain calm but be vigilant and report any unusual death of feathered animals such as poultry and ducks to the nearest agriculture office so they can provide immediate action.

Edillo also assured the public that it is still safe to eat chickens and eggs as long as these are properly cooked.

Meanwhile, agriculture secretary Manny Piñol issued DA Admin Circular No. 8 series of 2017 lifting the ban on the movement of live birds, poultry products including poultry meat, eggs and other products from Luzon to Visayas and Mindanao.

Based on the circular, movement is now allowed as long as the products are sourced from accredited farms outside the 7 km radius of controlled area. Gene Baquiran/PIA/Northernforum.net
