Destroyed bridges in Peñablanca, Cagayan leave 13 barangays isolated

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Several villages in Peñablanca, Cagayan, the town where super typhoon Lawin made landfall, are still unreachable due to broken bridges.

Peñablanca Vice Mayor Marilyn Taguinod told Rappler that the bridge connecting Kabbo and Cabasan villages and the Tawi bridge were destroyed by flashfloods at the height of the typhoon.

The destruction of the bridges have left the isolation of 13 villages: Cabasan, Bugatay, Sisim, Mangga, Buyun, Nabbabalayan, Minanga, Lappi, Callao, San Roque, Nannaryan,  Agugaddan, Malibabbag.

Taguinod said village officials and residents would have to cross the river using a rescue boat to report their situations.

The Search and Rescue Unit Foundation (SARUF) coordinated with the local government in helping transporting motorcycles to and from the villages.

Fronie Badajos, village council member of Nannaryan, was seen by the news team waiting his turn to be transported by the boat.

Badajos said it will be his first time to check the condition of his house since Lawin struck their town in Wednesday night, October 19.

He and his family moved to Tuguegarao before the typhoon’s landfall to ensure “safer” shelter.

“Gusto ko man umuwi pero wala naman akong matawiran. Kaya nung narinig kong mayroong bangka na nagtatawid, pumunta na ako agad dito. Hindi ko pa alam ang sitwasyon sa amin,” Badajos said.

Vice Mayor Taguinod admitted that trasporting relief goods in the isolated villages remains a problem, although she said they already prepositioned goods in the evacuation centers, including the isolated villages, before the typhoon.

She said it would take them a long time to rehabilitate the bridges.

She also said they are considering building temporary bridges but they will need the help of the national government to ensure that it will be safe and strong enough to hold light vehicles.Several villages in Peñablanca, Cagayan, the town where super typhoon Lawin made landfall, are still unreachable due to broken bridges.
