IN NUMBERS: Cagayan Valley a year after super typhoon Lawin

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- On Thursday, October 19, Super Typhoon Lawin (international name: Haima) marks its first year since its landfall in Peñablanca town in Cagayan province.

The typhoon, dubbed as the strongest typhoon to hit Cagayan in the recent years, had caused widespread damages in agriculture, infrastructure, government facilities, and private properties.

Only few foreign countries gave their donations as the government in 2016 said the Philippines can stand on its own and it does not need foreign assistance.

In the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council meeting on Tuesday, October 10, Governor Manuel Mamba said the National Disaster Coordinating Council “has not yet given any of the funds at this time, except for [constructing] temporary school buildings.”

One year after the typhoon, the main question that has to be asked is how far had the government performed for the rehabilitation and recovery of the victims. The Northern Forum looks at the numbers:
