LGUs undergo cultural mapping training, workshop

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Participants from 15 local government units (LGUs) in Cagayan will undergo a cultural mapping training and workshop in Solomon Hotel, Lal-lo on October 10-14.

In Cagayan Provincial Information Office’s Pagdidinnamagan: Kapehan sa Kapitolyo, Cagayan Museum Curator Jenifer Junio-Baquiran said this is to empower LGUs in conducting cultural mapping, for them to comprehensively detail Cagayano culture and identity.

She added that cultural mapping will also help LGUs in determining possible national or provincial cultural properties to be declared by National Commission on Culture and Arts (NCCA).

Aside from LGUs, culture and arts focal persons, the academe, and NCCA scholars who finished a graduate diploma course on cultural education are also set to attend.

The first batch of participating LGUs includes Tuguegarao, Tuao, Iguig, Piat, Gattaran, Lal-lo, Rizal, Pamplona, Camalaniugan, Sanchez Mira, Buguey, and Santa Teresita.

Junio-Baquiran said participants were grouped into two batches so that trainers can focus and effectively teach them cultural mapping.

Junio-Baquiran said NCCA consultant Arvin Villalon will train the participants.

She said that the participants are expected to conduct cultural mapping from November to December, in time for a targeted cultural summit on December 4-6. The summit aims to show how history and culture is important in governance and education, she added.

Last year, NCCA granted Cagayan P1.5 million in response for the commission’s call for grants. Junio-Baquiran said this will enable them to make a Culture and Arts Master Plan. However, she said that cultural mapping must first be done.

Junio-Baquiran said NCCA’s Manny Palattao will visit them on Wednesday, October 11 to monitor the spending of the grant. Northernforum.net
