TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- The National Food Authority (NFA) Region 2 here conducted a surprise inspections in various rice stores and retailers in the Cagayan Valley to see check for the presence of fake rice supposedly coated in plastic and reportedly coming from China.
NFA provincial director Emmanuel Villanueva on Thursday said in radio interview here, the inspection was aimed to ensure there was no fake rice being sold at the local markets as well as to prevent the entry of such product in the Cagayan Valley region.
He said they have so far not found any fake rice being sold in the market or any of the retail outlets here.
Villanueva urged the public to be more vigilant and to immediately report to the agency any rice store that sell fake rice.
Earlier, the Department of Health (DOH) also warned the public that ingestion of plastic rice might cause harm if ingested daily for at least three months because the contaminant was a nonfood-grade substance. SCDilan/PNA
