Nueva Vizcaya barangay captain shot dead

CAUAYAN CITY, Philippines- A barangay (village) chairman and a known consumer rights activist in Bambang town in Nueva Vizcaya province was killed by unknown gunmen on Thursday, April 6.

In a report, Senior Inspector Rafael Cabonitalla, Bambang town police chief, said San Fernando village chief Mario Labotoria Parolan, 55, was declared dead on arrival due to fatal gunshot wounds.

Parolan was with her wife, Nerly, riding a motorcycle on their way to the municipal hall when the masked gunmen fired at him in a close range in Banggot village, police said.

He died instantly at a gunshot wound in his left ear while his wife only sustained injuries when they fell off the motorcycle.

Recovered in the crime scene were two bullet shells of .45 caliber gun.

Police said witnesses saw the gunmen aboard a motorcyle with a covered license plate.

Police are now investigating the incident but they suspect his killing has something to do with his being a consumer rights activist.

While serving as a village chief for years, Parolan has been engaged into civic actions focused on protecting the right of local consumers by launching signature campaigns, radio guesting and passing council resolutions. –Northernforum.net
