Nueva Vizcaya posts zero casualty after ‘Lawin’

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya — Typhoon Lawin left damages to crops and infrastructure in Nueva Vizcaya province but did not claim any life.

With its strong winds deflected by the province’s mountain shields of Caraballo, Sierra Madre and Cordillera ranges, ‘Lawin’ failed to take a heavy toll on houses and other infrastructure projects.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reported zero casualty after the typhoon.

Acting PDRRM officer, Genaro Basilio Jr., said they are in the process of consolidating the damages inflicted by ‘Lawin’ and its predecessor, Typhoon Karen.

“Because of the typhoons that happened this week, we may have damages and degree of affectation that would merit the declaration of a state of calamity,” he said.

Basilio said however that the province was generally spared by ‘Lawin’ because of pre-emptive evacuation efforts made by local government units and barangay (village) officials.

“Relief assistance is available at the provincial government, should affected municipalities and barangays need them. They only need to provide us a report of their respective communities,” he said.

The national highway from Diadi to Sta. Fe towns is passable to all types of vehicles with light to moderate traffic due to road works along portions of the Maharlika highway.

A landslide which occurred early morning Friday at the Putlan-Minuli road section stalled commuters but was declared open after clearing operations by the Department of Public Works and Highways. (PNA)
