BAYOMBONG, Philippines– As the mining industry struggles to regain investor’s confidence in the Philippines, OceanaGold Philippines Inc. (OGPI) Chairman Dr. Jose “Joey” Leviste took on a challenging task to moderate a panel discussion at the biggest mining investment conference in Asia this year.

The 4-day Mining Investment Asia Conference & Exposition 2017 at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore highlighted a panel discussion which in the morning of Tuesday (March 29, 2017).

In an e-mail to the media, Leviste explained that the panel discussion focused on “the changing dynamic of the mining industry and uncovering value investment opportunities for investors – where are we heading and how to maximize the gain?”

The panelists were investment personalities that included Ronald-Peter Stöferle, CMT Managing Partner & Fund Manager, Incrementum AG, Liechtenstein; Robin Griffiths, Chief Technical Strategist, ECU Group, United Kingdom; Nicholas Assef, Founder & Executive Director, LCC Asia Pacific, Australia; Andrew Heinrichs, Director for Acquisitions, Strategic Venture Fund, Hong Kong, and Robert Adair, Director, International Equities & Fund Manager, UOB Asset Management, Singapore.

The panel delved on major questions affecting investment decisions. One of the mind-boggling questions asked was whether or not investment decisions based on short-term commodity price movements that owe more to politics than fundamentals should be made.

The panel also tackled China’s coal capacity cuts and expectations on the Trump administration in the United States. Investors were also asked which stock market could be trusted to handle the rebirth of the mining industry: Toronto or Australia? Also, the role of Singapore was closely examined.

The position of mainstream institutions like pensions and life insurance with regards to investment in the mining industry, like they do in utilities, was also discussed.

Investors also looked at which emerging markets and commodity sectors should be focused on, what is the potential role of gold as a monetary asset, and what would 2017 be like for mining investment. -Abe Almirol/Northernforum.net
