TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- The drug enforcement agency in Cagayan Valley region said there are at least four big-time protectors of illegal drug trade in Cagayan province, the Cagayan public information office said in a press release.

PDEA Assistant Regional Director Mario Ramos, during the Peace and Order Council (PPOC) Meeting held at the provincial capitol, said there are still protectors of illegal drug operations in the province despite the intensive anti-drug war campaign of the Duterte administration.

He added that there are 37 pushers and small protectors in their watch list.

Ramos also revealed during the conference that almost 80% or 649 out of 820 barangays in the province are still affected by illegal drugs.

All municipalities are affected, he said.

Ballesteros and Lasam towns are the most affected with all their barangays already drug-infested.

The percentage of drug use is still high in Tuguegarao City (98%), Gonzaga (96%), Abulug (95%), Pamplona (94%), Sanchez Mira (94%), Allacapan (93%), and Camalaniugan (93%). Sto. Nino town has the lowest incidence at 23%.

According to Ramos, the methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) and marijuana still tops the substance-trade list in Cagayan as these are the most used illegal-drugs here.

He said street prices of shabu is still at P5,000 per gram while marijuana sells for P1,500 per kilo.

The Philippine National Police also reported almost 9,000 users in the province have already surrendered on the Double Barrel Alpha program, more commonly known as “Oplan Tokhang.”

Meanwhile, Cagayan Governor Manuel N. Mamba expressed his dismay on the problem of illegal-drugs, saying some officials use money from illegal-drug trade to fund their campaign and career in politics. -Julius Catulin/Northernforum.net
