PNP-Cagayan Valley chief condemns ‘barbaric’ NPA attack in Quirino

TUGUEGARAO CITY, PHILIPPINES– The regional police director of Philippine National Police (PNP) Cagayan Valley unit condemned the “misguided,” “barbaric” and “anti-people” attacks of New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Quirino province.

In a press statement, the regional police information office said Police Chief Superintendent Eliseo Rasco condemned “in the strongest possible terms the atrocities” against the police in Maddela town.

NPA rebels have since admitted to perpetrating the attack at the Maddela police station, killing Police Officer 2 Jerome Cardenas. The group also took with them at least four vehicles, including two mobile patrols, but had since been recovered.

“I condemn in the strongest term possible the barbaric acts of the New People’s Army against the territorial police force in Maddela, who were only peaceably doing their duties inside the police station,” a visibly angry Rasco said during a meeting with the Quirino provincial police officers.

Rasco said the communist guerrillas did not only “committed the barbaric act” against the Maddela police but also against the people of the town.

He said the attack showed the “insincerity” of the NPA in pursuing peace talks with the government.

The peace talks, according to the regional police chief, have been “scuttled” many times in the past because of the “unilateral actions of NPAs against the government security forces.”

Rasco had already placed the whole Region 2 police into full alert status as joint forces of Quirino police, Regional Public Safety Battalion and the 86th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army are conducting hot pursuit operations against the rebel group. Northernforum.net
