SM Foundation awards classrooms in Cagayan

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines– The SM Foundation turned over a fully furnished two-storey 4-classroom school building to Carig Elementary School here, one of the most devastated schools here when typhoon Lawin hit the province in October 2016.

Emely Tango, school principal,  said they lost two school buildings to typhoon Lawin while the roofs of the other buildings were blown away.

“It is a big blessing from God, or better yet, a miracle from God when SM Foundation came to check on the school early this year,” Tango said, adding that the new school building will be used by Grades 3 and 6 students.

She said the new building will be the first two-storey building in their school.

The school also received at least 200 student arm chairs with 20 left-handed armchairs, four teacher’s desk sets, eight blackboards, 16 wall fans, 4 wall clocks and 4 washrooms with water closets.

“Our teachers and students are so happy with SM’s school building that they even developed an eco-park in front of it,” the principal added.

SM Foundation aims to provide each student his/her own chair so that each can have adequate space for learning.

Proper furniture, on the other hand, for the teachers not only helps them improve their quality of teaching but also allows the students to understand and respect the space of authority and leadership.

Sufficient ventilation and fully-functioning washrooms teach students the importance of proper hygiene and help make the students comfortable as they learn.

“We don’t just construct school buildings. We make sure that the classrooms are properly furnished,” said Linda Atayde, SM Foundation Executive Director for Education.

“SM Foundation is aligned with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals which include quality education. The students’ surroundings are important in their learning process. A conducive environment enhances their creativity and helps sharpen their minds, while having proper facilities help develop good habits that will be with them as they grow.”

Since 2002, SM Foundation, an active member of DepED’s Adopt-a-School Program, has constructed 82 school buildings with 252 classrooms nationwide. PIA/PR
