TESDA aids 4,000 typhoon victim-scholars in Region 2

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan – Some 4,000 individuals who lost their livelihood because of the series of typhoons that hit the region for the past months were given scholarships by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

Nestor Ave, officer-in-charge, said an amount of P31 million was released for the region to implement the program in which Isabela province has the biggest share with P12 million, followed by Cagayan with P9M, Nueva Vizcaya with P5M, Quirino with P3.5M and Batanes with P1.5M scholarship grants.

Ave said through the skills mapping in partnership with the barangay officials, they were able to identify the scholars of the program.

“We will also conduct evaluation of the submitted lists to ensure that all are really deserving of the scholarship program as we only prioritize those who lost their livelihood during the typhoons Lawin, Karen and Ferdie,” Ave said.

He said the scholars were given freedom to choose the skills training program that they want to take as long as it is within the course offerings of the said institution.   “

This will help them a lot as they can also use their certifications for greener pasture not only in their communities but also abroad,” Ave said.

Ave added that the scholars may choose either to enroll in any of their training schools or in any TESDA accredited schools which offers their chosen program. –PIA
