TESDA opens programs for drug surrenderers

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan – The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in the Cagayan Valley region has recently opened its skills development programs for drug surrenderees regionwide.
Ma. Magdalena P. Butal, TESDA executive director, said this is in response to reports that surrendered drug users and pushers resort to their old trades because they have no other means of livelihood.
“We already included in our core agenda the provision of skills development trainings for either drug users or pushers as one of our immediate interventions for drug surrenderees who desire a new life,” Butal said.
She said they will work hand-in-hand with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in identifying qualified beneficiaries who are interested to undergo TESDA’s skills training programs.
“We will provide the drug surrenderees with skills training programs that are closely aligned with their interests, skills and potentials,” she said, adding that this will make drug surrenderees realize their value to their families and to society.
Butal said we can only transform these drug surrenderers if we equipped them with skills and opportunities to be engaged in livelihood activities or get employed.
She added that sometimes, all the people in distress need is another chance. PIA
