1 soldier hurt as AFP, NPA rebels clash in Cagayan

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Soldiers and members of the communist guerrilla clashed in Sto. Niño town in Cagayan province on Sunday, February 25, and Monday, February 26.

In a report, Cagayan police chief Senior Superintendent Warren Tolito said more or less 10 New People’s Army (NPA) rebels engaged in a firefight with members of the 17th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army in Barangay Abarriongan Uneg in Sto. Niño Sunday.

The firefight lasted for about 5 minutes as the rebels withdrew to east direction, police said.

Police said no casualty from the government troop were reported in the encounter.

Meanwhile, Northern Luzon Command (NOLCOM) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Isagani Nato said the same Army battalion ensued in firefight with rebels in the same area the following day.

Nato said the NPA rebels suffered “undetermined number” of casualties, while a government troop suffered gunshot wounds in his shoulder.

Nato said they will continue an intensified counterinsurgency measures in “”preselected target areas identified as NPA affected communities to clear them of armed threats, and eventually reduce their capability.”  Northernforum.net
