TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Transportation chief Arthur Tugade on Wednesday, March 14, said his administration is focused in improving the two operating airports in Cagayan province.

Tugade said Governor Manuel Mamba’s proposed new international airport in the tri-boundary of Amulung, Tuao and Solana towns will be considered “in due time.”

He said that while the airports in Tuguegarao and Lal-lo are being developed, the “opportunity [for the new international airport] will always be there.”

“But the issue is, when? At this time, when you try to improve Lal-lo and make it operational, at this time, when you improve Tuguegarao, tell me, is it the time,” Tugade asked.

“Perhaps, at some future time, that opportunity and that issue will be raised, but as of this moment as we talk, it is sufficient at this time, that we [modernize] Tuguegarao and operate Lal-lo [airports],” he added.

Tugade was in Tuguegarao Airport on Wednesday to turn over the new terminal building and to inspect the status of the Department of Transportations’ (DOTr) upgrading projects,

The airport is currently undergoing rehabilitation and expansion consisting of terminal upgrades and widening of runway, for night landing capabilities, and taxiway.

Earlier, Cagayan Third District Representative Randy Ting said he asked for the funding of airport upgrades to boost the airport’s capabilities, and eventually making it an international airport. (READ: Rep. Ting: Tuguegarao airport can be converted to int’l airport)
