A recent incident in Noicattaro, a town in the Bari region, has sparked concern among residents after a young girl was reportedly attacked by a wild animal. This alarming event took place on August 4th while the child was playing in a small park along Via Falcone. Initial reports suggest that the assailant was a wolf, a claim confirmed by the town’s mayor, Raimondo Innamorato, via a post on social media. The unexpected nature of this attack has left the community on edge, as local authorities strive to address the situation promptly.
In response to this frightening encounter, the mayor issued a warning to the public, highlighting a recent sighting of the animal near Piazza della Concordia. As reported by Bari Today, the alert was raised on Tuesday evening, leading to an emergency meeting at the Prefecture the following morning to discuss potential measures.
Residents Urged to Stay Vigilant
In an unsettling development, a wolf was spotted earlier today in the countryside behind the Famila supermarket in Noicattaro. This sighting is believed to be linked to the attack on the six-year-old girl, prompting officials to take immediate action. The mayor has called upon the Local Police, Anpana, and veterinary technicians from the ASL to collaborate in capturing the animal. Their plan includes setting a trap to safely relocate the creature if necessary.
Local residents are being advised to report any sightings of the wolf, whether through video, photographs, or direct communication with local authorities. The areas around the Famila supermarket, Via Bachelet, and the Lama region have been designated as off-limits for the time being, as well as the agricultural perimeters nearby.
The local administration is actively working alongside the Prefecture and the Animal Welfare Department of the Apulia region to find a sustainable solution. Experts from the veterinary university are expected to conduct further assessments regarding the animal’s presence and the ongoing concerns in Noicattaro.
Calls for Accountability
Amid these developments, councilor Mariagrazia Tritto has filed a formal complaint with the Prosecutor’s Office, seeking clarification on potential responsibilities connected to the management of prior reports concerning the presence of wolves and other dangerous animals in the area.
As Tritto pointed out, a report was made to the town in April 2024 regarding a wolf sighting, but no follow-up actions were taken. She emphasized that her complaint is not politically motivated but rather grounded in verifiable administrative records.
In light of the situation, Mayor Innamorato refrained from addressing political criticisms in his communication aimed at alerting residents. He reiterated that the primary focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of the community, expressing a desire to avoid engaging in media-driven political disputes.
