TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Fire incidents in Cagayan Valley Region have decreased in 2017 compared to data from 2016, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) 02 reported on Tuesday, March 13.

From 191 cases in 2016, fire incidents in the region dropped to 142 last year, BFP Public Information Service Chief Fire Inspector Aristotle Atal said in Tipon-Tipan sa Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Region 02.

BFP recorded 94 residential fires in 2017, which is lower than 135 incidents in 2016.

Further, only three commercial fire incidents transpired in 2017 compared to 12 cases in 2016.

Atal noted the “big difference” as “good news” and credited the developing awareness of the public as factor in the decrease.

The fire chief inspector also said there was no other “major” fire after the “Bed and Breakfast” incident in this city in 2010.

Meanwhile, BFP also noted a drop in total cost of damages. From P145, 855, 935 worth of damages in 2016, P100, 759,559.67 cost of damages is recorded in 2017.

BFP has started its fire-prevention and awareness campaign this March in celebration of Fire Prevention Month, with the theme: “Ligtas na Pilipinas ating hangad, pag-iingat sa sunog ay sa sarili ipatupad.” Northernforum.net
