Cash in on Cash App's $15M security settlement: How to file a claim before the deadline

The clock is ticking for Cash App users to take advantage of a $15 million settlement.

What led to the Cash App security incident?

In December 2021, a lawsuit revealed a security breach that led to the unauthorized exposure of personal information belonging to 8.2 million current and past Cash App Investing customers.

According to the lawsuit, a former employee who had access to customer data during their tenure at Cash App improperly downloaded this information without user consent.

Deadline for Cash App security settlement claims

The United States District Court for the Northern District of California recently approved several changes to the deadlines concerning this case, as per court documents. Nevertheless, the final date to submit a claim remains set for Monday, Nov. 18.

Eligibility for filing a claim

Users who experienced unauthorized or fraudulent withdrawals or transfers from their Cash App account between Aug. 23, 2018, and Aug. 20, 2024, may file a claim for compensation up to $2,500, states the Cash App website.

Those eligible for filing must not have received reimbursement from Block Inc., Cash App Investing, or any third party for the losses incurred, according to the mobile payment service.

Types of claims for Cash App users

Cash App outlines several types of claims that users can file:

  • Out-of-pocket losses: Users can claim if their account was compromised during the data breach. Eligible claimants who provide the necessary documentation might be reimbursed up to $2,500.
  • Lost time: Users may also be reimbursed for the time spent dealing with the breach’s consequences. Claims can be made for up to three hours at a rate of $25 per hour.
  • Transaction losses: Users who have suffered financial losses and have not been compensated can file a claim.

Multiple Cash App accounts

Users should fill out only one claim form, even if they have multiple Cash App accounts. If submitting claims for several accounts, Cash App advises to list all relevant $cashtag information on a single form.

Submitting a claim

To proceed with a claim, Cash App users must submit a completed claim form by Nov. 18. Forms can be submitted online at https://cashappsecuritysettlement.com/submit-claim.
