Early Closures for U.S. Stock Markets Around Thanksgiving

The U.S. stock markets will adjust their hours around the Thanksgiving holiday. On Thursday, November 28, major stock markets including the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) will be closed in celebration of Thanksgiving. The following day, Friday, November 29, these markets will open but will close earlier than usual, at 1 p.m. ET.

Similarly, the U.S. bond market will observe the holiday by closing on Thursday and will follow an early closure at 2 p.m. ET on Friday, as outlined by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

Following the brief pause for Thanksgiving and the shortened trading session on Black Friday, normal trading hours will resume on Wall Street. However, traders will be looking ahead to the next holiday schedule, which includes a full closure on Wednesday, December 25, for Christmas. Additionally, markets will close early at 1 p.m. ET on Christmas Eve, December 24.

2024 Holiday Schedule for U.S. Stock Markets

Looking forward into 2024, the U.S. stock markets have announced the following closures:

  • Thanksgiving: Markets will be closed on Thursday, November 28, and will also close early at 1 p.m. ET on Friday, November 29.
  • Christmas: The markets will observe Christmas on Wednesday, December 25, with a full-day closure. Additionally, markets will close early at 1 p.m. ET on Christmas Eve, December 24.
