Update on :
Is the stock market open or closed on the Jan. 9 national day of mourning? What to know

President Joe Biden has declared Thursday, Jan. 9, a national day of mourning in remembrance of former President Jimmy Carter’s passing.

Biden has urged Americans to gather on Jan. 9 at their local places of worship to honor Carter’s memory.

“I call upon the global community who feels our loss to partake in this day of reflection,” Biden expressed in a statement after Carter’s death.

The President also announced that flags would be flown at half-staff at the White House, on all public buildings and grounds, across all military posts and naval stations, and at half-mast on naval ships for 30 days following Carter’s death.

In the past, similar national days of mourning were observed for former Presidents George H. W. Bush in 2018 and Gerald Ford in 2006, which included the closure of U.S. federal offices and stock markets.

Here’s the information regarding the status of U.S stock markets on Jan. 9.

Will the stock market be open on Jan. 9?

The New York Stock Exchange will suspend trading on Thursday, Jan. 9.

Similarly, Nasdaq announced it will cease trading of all U.S. equities and options on the same day.

While the bond markets will operate, they will close early at 2 p.m. ET, adhering to a recommendation from the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

“Jimmy Carter, originally a farmer and family man, committed his life to public service and the defense of freedom,” stated Lynn Martin, President of NYSE Group, in a press release.

The last instance when the New York Stock Exchange halted trading to honor a deceased former president was in December 2018 following the death of George H. W. Bush.
