Blue lanes are for tricycles, said Tuguegarao City Mayor Jefferson Soriano as an answer to the Department of Interior and Local Government’s order to ban tricycles on national highways.
The DILG Memorandum Circular 2020-036 came out on February 17, which prohibits tricycles, manual and motorized pedicabs from operating on National Highways, signifying that the national highway is intended for four-wheel vehicles.
Soriano then is pushing for an ordinance mandating all tricycles and other slow moving vehicles to use the outer lane which will be called the ‘Blue lane’ of the national road.
The outer-lane from the four-lane national highways in the city will be marked and will be made ‘blue-lane’ according to Soriano.
“I think the very reason of this order is for the safety of all commuters and prevent traffic in the national roads,” Soriano said.
There are more than 8,000 registered tricycles moving within the city, which is the primary public transportation vehicle aside from vans and jeepneys.
The mayor then urged all tricycle drivers to cooperate and start using the outer-lane whenever they are plying the national roads. (With reports from Philippine Information Agency Region 2)
