The recent incident involving a shocking bill sent to the family of Manfredi Marcucci, a 16-year-old Italian who suffered injuries in a tragic fire in Crans Montana, has stirred quite a bit of controversy. The unfortunate event unfolded during the transition from December 31 to January 1, leaving many questioning the healthcare system in Switzerland, especially when it comes to addressing emergencies. While it’s important to clarify that this bill doesnโt require payment, the gesture from the hospital in Sion has raised eyebrows for its insensitivity.
The staggering amount of โฌ75,000 for just 15 hours in intensive care is astonishing, especially for a young man who was severely burned after the fire consumed Le Constellation due to a flashover. This situation starkly contrasts with Italyโs national healthcare system, which is free for its citizens.
The Controversial Invoice
The Swiss government has already allocated millions of francs to support the families affected by the fire. However, the hospital’s approach in Sion has sparked criticism. A leading newspaper bluntly described the situation as โa lack of sensitivity towards individuals who have already endured great suffering.โ
This incident might not be isolated, as it is likely that other Italian nationals injured in the fire, totaling 18 victims, could also receive similar bills. The Marcucci family expressed concern over this unexpected request, labeling it as โabsurd.โ They have reached out to the embassy for assurance that they wonโt have to bear any costs, with Umberto Marcucci emphasizing how paradoxical it would be to impose such expenses on them, especially considering the advantages of Italyโs healthcare system.
Reassurances for the Families
Gian Lorenzo Cornado, the Italian ambassador in Switzerland, is already addressing the matter. He has received assurances from the Swiss president that the families of the victims โwill not have to pay anything at all.โ Furthermore, it has been confirmed that the costs will be borne by the Canton of Valais, not by the Italian state. Failing to uphold this commitment would have been a significant injustice to the victims and their families.
