For many of us who navigated the vibrant landscapes of the 1990s, this was the time of year that signaled the onset of a new school year. The thrill of choosing the perfect school supplies—everything from backpacks to notebooks—was an essential rite of passage. In the bustling corridors of our schools, the backpacks we carried were more than just functional items; they were status symbols. Today’s students might strut into class with trendy bags from Eastpak or The North Face, but back in the 90s, it was all about the fierce rivalry between Invicta and Seven. Sure, there were cartoon-themed backpacks and generic, budget-friendly options, but if you wanted to be cool, you had to sport one of the must-have designs. The Invicta Jolly, especially in its eye-catching Fluo variant, was a staple among students, boasting bold colors like neon green, pink, blue, and orange against a classic black base. Personally, I was a proud member of Team Seven, and my favorite was the Seven Byte Disc. This innovative backpack, with its expandable design and vibrant colors like blue, red, and yellow, was a game-changer. It even had a side pocket tailored for my Walkman or CD player, complete with a hole for headphone wires—how cutting-edge!
The essential diary of our school days was the Smemoranda, a canvas for our creativity and secrets. Students of all ages stuffed these diaries with notes, stickers, homework sheets, and even candy wrappers, resulting in a diary that could easily reach towering heights. I only had the Smemo for a single year in 1998; after that, I gravitated toward the Comix diary, and even more so, the Sotto Banco. This iconic diary featured a reversible ring cover and pages filled with jokes, poems, and other cultural tidbits that spoke to our youthful hearts. It was truly one-of-a-kind, and I’ve never found anything quite like it since.
When it came to pencil cases, elementary school students had a clear choice: the multi-tiered case adorned with their favorite cartoon characters. Whether it was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Street Sharks, or The Smurfs, having a themed pencil case was a must. Older students often opted for simpler pouches, with girls gravitating toward trendy brands like Onyx while boys proudly carried the Seven Murales pouch—a true classic of the time.
No school supply list was complete without an assortment of pens, highlighters, erasers, and other stationery essentials. The Bic four-color pen was a must-have, but the true pros flaunted pens with ten scented colors, attempting to unleash them all at once—only to find their pen quickly breaking. Personally, I preferred gel pens over traditional ballpoints for their smoother flow on paper. In elementary school, it was almost obligatory to have the erasable Replay pens, which featured a clever cap that hid a built-in eraser. The green pen was a new addition back then, joining the classic black, blue, and red, though sadly it was often banned from use during tests, as teachers frowned upon its vibrant hue.
Every pencil case also housed Stabilo highlighters in vibrant yellow, green, orange, and pink, along with the indispensable correction fluid. Initially available in liquid form with a brush, it soon transformed into pens and eventually into tape—though this last version often broke after just a few uses. And let’s not forget the erasers! The iconic red and blue bicolor eraser was a staple, alongside the classic white one, while the purpose of the octagonal blue eraser remained a mystery to many. A complete school kit also needed a stick glue and, especially for geometry class, a compass and protractor. Admit it—how many times did you accidentally jab yourself with the compass needle?
And then there was the fashion of the 90s school scene! Luxury brands were out of reach for most students, so unlike today, you wouldn’t find Gucci or Louis Vuitton in classrooms. Instead, the hallways were filled with peers clad in jeans, band t-shirts—Nirvana being a top pick—or simple white and black shirts, along with Champion, FILA, and AKI sweatshirts, as well as brightly colored nylon tracksuits from Nike and Adidas. And of course, white sneakers were the footwear of choice, whether they were Nike, Madigan, Asics, Reebok (especially popular with basketball fans), Superga, or the ever-present Converse All-Stars.
The memories of our school days are painted with vibrant colors and lively styles, each item reflecting a piece of our youth and the trends that shaped our experiences.
