A thought-provoking sign has appeared outside Antonio Altobello’s bakery in San Mauro Cilento, a small town in the province of Salerno, and it has already sparked a lively debate. In a bold move, the baker has decided to take matters into his own hands regarding the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on the European Union. Rather than remaining silent, Altobello chose a unique form of protest that has captured the attention of locals and social media alike.
What did he do? He announced that the price of bread for American customers would be doubled, effectively raising it by a staggering 100%. “The sign aimed at Americans to make them pay twice as much for bread? Yesterday we had a storm here, and it got all wet and fell down. But yes, I’ll put up another one tomorrow morning,” Altobello shared in an interview with La Repubblica. The baker, who moved to this location in 2002 after running a bakery in Acciaroli, explained that the original sign was beautifully crafted on parchment paper and served as a humorous yet pointed response to the ongoing trade tensions.
The sign reads: “In response to Mr. Trump’s tariffs, we are increasing the price of our products by 100% for all U.S. citizens.” It started as a playful jab. “Here in the South, we love to provoke with humor, just like the jokes of Massimo Troisi. The sign was created in jest after hearing Trump say to Europe, ‘Spend 600 billion or I’ll impose a 35% tariff.’ I simply took a piece of paper and wrote that message directed at Americans,” he elaborated.
Altobello emphasizes that his intent is to stir a dialogue about the silence and subservience many Italians seem to exhibit towards Trump’s and the EU’s decisions. “We need to show that the Italian people are alive, have character, and a conscience.” Interestingly, there aren’t many Americans frequenting his bakery. “There’s one American family with Cilento roots that comes regularly; they are my longest-standing customers. Do you think I can charge them 100% more? I haven’t seen them this year, but their relatives likely told them about the sign, and no one has complained. I thought, is it really possible that we all have to suffer in silence?”
The stunt has resonated with many, as customers have been taking selfies with the sign and sharing them on social media. “It’s a small gesture, but it carries a lot of meaning,” Altobello remarked during an interview with TgCom24. Unsurprisingly, his initiative has garnered significant attention from national media, sparking discussions about the potential impact of Trump’s tariffs on the technology market.
In a further act of defiance, the baker has also displayed a Palestinian flag beneath his bakery’s sign. “I’m not interested in politics; I work hard in my bakery. I’m an Italian like many others, and I deserve respect,” he stated firmly. He added, “I voted for Giorgia Meloni, but she needs to show more strength when it comes to the issues in Palestine. I don’t like her attitude towards a suffering people.”
