Cagayan crime rate spikes by 372%

Cagayan’s crime rate spiked during the community quarantine compared last 2019, according to the data of the Police Provincial Office.
PCol. Ariel Narag Quilang, PNP Cagayan Director, said that from the span of December 17, 2019 to March 16, 2020, they had recorded a total of 593 crimes, while the crime rate of the province increased by 372 percent or an additional 2,209 crimes during the start of the community quarantine to present with a total of 2,802 crimes.
In addition, on peace and order index, there was an increase of 488 percent or 2,291 crimes recorded.
While on the public safety index, data showed a decrease of 66 percent or 83 crimes were recorded.
On index crimes, Quilang said that a decrease of 54 percent or 45 crimes were recorded.
Index crimes include murder, homicide, physical injury, crimes against property such as robbery, theft, carnapping and cattle rustling.
Moreover, he said that on non-index crimes, an increase of 605 percent or 2,336 crimes were recorded. These crimes include gambling, vandalism, community quarantine violations, liquor laws, forgery, assault, and counterfeiting.
“There were so many significant incidents that happened since the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ),” Quilang said.
He also said that the CPPO will continue to serve and protect despite the declaration that the province is still under community quarantine.
