“It’s essential that gifts convey love and generosity,” Chapman emphasizes. “However, a self-improvement gift can threaten a person’s self-image, challenging a fundamental social need: to be appreciated unconditionally.” Beyond disappointment, such gifts can trigger a chain reaction of frustration and irritation, potentially leading to negative reviews of the brand associated with the gift.
Chapman illustrates this concept with a relatable example: “A yoga mat in January symbolizes motivation, but finding it under the Christmas tree might send the message: you need to lose weight. When it comes to self-improvement products, it’s best to stick to buying them for oneself.”
