LTO removes LGBTQ+ priority lane in Cagayan Valley

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has ordered the removal of the priority lane established for the members of the LGBTQ+ community in Cagayan Valley, starting April 16.

It can be recalled that the LTO called to include the LGBTQ+ community among the people who can be accommodated in the agency’s priority lanes.

Bahaghari’s National Chair of Advocacy Reyna Valmores said they acknowledged the agency’s initiative to “address the concerns” of the LGBTQ+, however, priority lanes in government agencies are meant to assist people with certain difficulties.

The special lane gave the wrong impression that being a part of the LGBTQ+ community impairs an individual, which may further attract unnecessary hostility towards them.

LTO Region 2 previously explained that they mean no harm and that it was part of the LTO’s “gender and development” (GAD) project for the month of March.

“I understand that the region’s leadership merely conceptualized the activity in a desire to recognize the LGBTQ+ community. There was no intention to offend or unnecessarily put them in the spotlight,” LTO chief Jay Art Tugade said in a statement and already ordered its removal to avoid confusion and misunderstanding.
