More Troops on the Streets: 10,000 Soldiers Deployed in Cities and Stations, League Celebrates!

The landscape of national security is about to undergo a significant transformation, with a decisive increase in military presence across the country. Recently, a critical decision was made by the Defense Committee in the Chamber of Deputies to bolster the number of military personnel from 6,800 to a robust 10,000. This move aims to enhance safety measures in urban areas, train stations, and other sensitive locations. The resolution received unanimous support from the ruling majority, signaling a strong commitment to public security.

As reported by the editorial team of La Repubblica, this resolution not only seeks to provide military support to 61 provincial capitals currently lacking such protection but also includes plans to hire additional Carabinieri. The leader of the League party, Matteo Salvini, is particularly pleased with this development, having been an advocate for the strengthening of the “Strade Sicure” initiative. Not long ago, discussions had even hinted at the possibility of discontinuing this operation.

Salvini expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This is a battle we have been fighting for quite some time, addressing the concerns of citizens and communities. Now, we can finally reinforce the presence of the State and ensure greater security. Today marks an important step in the right direction. We will not back down on the safety of Italians.”

The Concerns of Others

While the League has been vocal in its support for the increase in military personnel, other political factions, such as Forza Italia and Fratelli d’Italia, have raised some concerns. Specifically, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has attempted to temper the enthusiasm surrounding this initiative. Ultimately, it was Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni who reassured the Deputy Prime Minister, aligning herself with the Transport Minister despite Crosetto’s reservations.

Government Commitments

What exactly does this resolution entail? According to AGI, the document outlines the Government’s commitment to “take initiatives to increase the contingent of the ‘Strade Sicure’ operation, enhancing static and dynamic patrols in cities, at borders, in train stations, and at sensitive sites and locations. This will be achieved through the urgent deployment of at least an additional 3,200 military personnel, contingent on financial coverage, logistical, training, and regulatory adjustments, along with the hiring of further units, including as auxiliaries, for the Carabinieri.”

The “Strade Sicure” Initiative

The situation is further contextualized by the fact that the Italian army has been conducting the “Strade Sicure” operation continuously since August 4, 2008. Over the years, however, the military presence has fluctuated, decreasing from 7,050 personnel in June 2021 to 6,000 by June 2022, and down to 5,000 by the end of December 2022.

The current government has decided to “strengthen the contingent of Strade Sicure, aiming for the current 6,000 soldiers stationed across 58 provinces, protecting roughly 1,000 sensitive sites and areas, along with 800 soldiers dedicated to ‘stazioni Sicure.’”

Moreover, Italian military personnel are also engaged in combating and preventing environmental crimes, particularly in areas like the “land of fires,” addressing drug-related offenses and illegal immigration, while performing a vital role in deterrence and prevention efforts.
