A significant upheaval is unfolding for the workforce at Shein’s logistics center in Stradella, located in the Oltrepò Pavese region. The news has sent shockwaves through the community, as 311 permanent employees face the prospect of losing their jobs due to the impending closure of the only production site in Italy. Additionally, the situation is exacerbated by the non-renewal of 150 expiring contracts, with only around sixty workers expected to be reassigned to other facilities.
Reports from Il Giorno indicate that out of those who will be retained, 50 will remain in Stradella, while 10 will be relocated to Castelsangiovanni in the Piacenza province. This development follows discussions between unions and Fiege Logistics, the company appointed by the Chinese e-commerce giant in 2022 to handle its logistics operations.
The official announcement came after a meeting at the Prefecture in Pavia, where the closure was confirmed to take place by the end of the year, solidifying the transfer of operations to Poland. However, there remains a glimmer of hope that the Stradella site could be acquired by other buyers next year, a possibility suggested by Fiege during their meeting.
Further discussions are scheduled for September 22, aiming to address the financial aspects surrounding the closure. Meanwhile, Shein has issued a formal statement outlining the current situation. Just a month prior, the company faced a €1 million fine from the Antitrust authority for misleading advertising.
Shein’s Official Position on the Closure
In their statement, Shein clarified that the logistics hub in Stradella is managed by its partner, Fiege. They mentioned that the three-year service agreement between Shein and Fiege commenced in December 2022 and is set to conclude naturally in December 2025. The company noted, “In line with Shein’s broader strategy aimed at optimizing services and enhancing customer experience, Fiege was informed more than a year in advance about the decision to cease operations in Stradella.”
Preparation for Transition
The statement emphasized the foresight shown in giving Fiege ample time to prepare for this transition, ensuring that they could implement necessary adjustments, particularly concerning their workforce. Shein reassured that throughout this process, they have maintained a constant and transparent dialogue with Fiege and have fully honored all financial and contractual obligations stipulated in their agreement.
Insights from Union Leaders
Sergio Antonini, the General Secretary of Filt CGIL Pavia, revealed to Fanpage that discussions with Fiege had been initiated the previous winter, anticipating the end of Shein’s contract in December 2025. By May, the communication regarding the shift of operations to Poland was officially conveyed.
Challenges Ahead
The solutions proposed thus far have been deemed “insufficient,” leading to the upcoming meeting on September 22, where efforts will be made to secure better financial conditions for the affected employees. With limited options remaining in terms of job placements, the discussions will focus on enhancing the economic support available. There have been talks of about ten positions being offered in Bologna and another hundred in Novara, alongside a relocation incentive of €6,000 for employees willing to move.
