Tropical cyclone ‘Malakas’ to enter PAR as TD ‘Agaton’ weakens

Tuguegarao City, Cagayan – The state weather bureau said on Monday morning, April 11, that tropical cyclone ‘Malakas’ (international name) is set to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Monday night or early Tuesday while tropical depression ‘Agaton’ slightly weakens.

PAGASA said in its latest report that ‘Malakas’ has gained intensity as it moves northwestward over the Philippine sea into PAR.

The last detected location of the cyclone was 1,300 kilometers east of Southern Luzon packing 100kph winds near its center with gusts reaching 125kph.

The tropical cyclone is now headed northwest with a travelling speed of 15 kph.

Once ‘Malakas’ enters PAR, it will be named “Basyang” according to PAGASA, citing that the storm’s duration is expected to short as it gears towards becoming a typhoon on Monday night.

State weather experts have also bared that its peak strength will reach up to 155kph by Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

Presently, the oncoming storm is still unlikely to direct the weather condition in the country, PAGASA added.

However, the agency sees the storm to affect the movement and intensity of tropical depression ‘Agaton’ as it slightly weakens within PH.

Malakas is seen to be 1,135 kms east of Southern Luzon on Tuesday morning, 1,480 km east of Central Luzon by early Wednesday, 1,495 km east of extreme Northern Luzon by Thursday and a distant 2,270 km east northeast of extreme Northern Luzon.

TD Agaton slightly weakens

In a separate advisory on Monday morning, April 11, the state weather experts said Tropical Depression ‘Agaton’ has slightly lowered its strength as it stays somewhat steady over the coast of Leyte bringing record rains and flooding.

As of noon time on Monday, Agaton has stayed almost stationary around Tanauan, Leyte with now a weaker 55 kph winds near its center and gusts decreasing to 60kph from its original 75kph.

Several areas are currently under Signal No.1 in Visayas mostly in Samar, Leyte, Cebu, Bohol, Northern Surigao and the Dinagat Islands. TNF
