The recent saga of Albert, a three-year-old black kitten, has captured the attention of internet users everywhere. This little feline found himself in quite a predicament when he was listed for sale on Vinted for the equivalent of about 30 euros. What makes this situation particularly alarming is that the platform’s regulations explicitly prohibit the buying and selling of animals. Fortunately, fate intervened, leading to a heartwarming rescue story that has since spread like wildfire across social media.
Abi Left, the founder of Left Paw Cat Rescue, a charity dedicated to saving stray and abandoned cats in the southern region of Birmingham, England, stumbled upon the troubling advertisement. Without hesitation, Abi reached out to the seller to arrange a meeting and secure Albert’s safety. Her experience during this encounter was striking. “I didn’t even mention I was with a rescue center; she was simply thrilled to hand over her cat,” Abi recounted, reflecting on the seller’s apparent lack of awareness about the ethics of her actions. Despite facing backlash for her decision to “purchase” the kitten in order to save him, Abi was puzzled by the criticism, admitting she didn’t understand what was wrong with her actions.
Vinted acted swiftly upon receiving reports about the listing, promptly removing it. A spokesperson for the company made it clear: “We absolutely do not tolerate this kind of behavior. Our platform is not a place for selling animals, as stated in our Catalog Rules.” To detect such prohibited listings, Vinted employs specialized software alongside user reports, enabling quick monitoring and removal of any non-compliant content. Abi poignantly noted that the price tag attached to Albert’s life spoke volumes about how little value the seller placed on him.
The story has sparked a range of reactions online, with animal welfare organizations and social media users alike expressing their outrage. Interestingly, some even criticized Abi for having “bought” the cat to rescue him, demonstrating the complexity of opinions surrounding animal welfare.
So, how is Albert faring now? Upon his rescue, he was found to be in good health, albeit very frightened. He was welcomed into a new home, where he initially spent his days hiding. “At least he’s safe now. We know he’s in the right hands and not accidentally placed in the wrong ones,” Abi shared, offering some comfort during a troubling time.
His new caretaker, Rebekah, has provided updates indicating that Albert is now “safe and protected.” In a post shared on January 7 by Left Paw Cat Rescue, Albert’s progress has been documented; he is no longer hiding and has even started to enjoy being held. The transformation from a frightened kitten to a more confident companion exemplifies the profound impact of rescue efforts and the importance of responsible pet ownership.
