STA PRAXEDES, Cagayan- The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) here is distributing fiber glass fishing boats to fisherfolk who were victims of ‘Lawin’ in the province.
Milagros C. Morales, regional director, said BFAR National Director Undersecretary Commodore Eduardo B. Gongona pledged to give 1,000 boats for the province of Cagayan.
Morales said, of the said number, some were already given to the Provincial Local Government Unit (PLGU) here who will be in-charge in identifying the beneficiaries and distributing the boats by batch.
Following the concerns that some fishermen are renting a boat after Lawin devastation, Morales said that they need to complete the beneficiaries’ fishing paraphernalia to ensure sustainability of their livelihood.
“We distribute fiber glass boats as we are trying to slowly shift from the wooden ones as we support the government’s effort to preserve our trees in the mountain,” Morales said.
Morales also warned fishermen who are still patronizing the use of illegal fishing gears to stop, otherwise, legal matters will take place.
Morales said they will issue a patrol boat to the LGU to mobilize their law enforcers to monitor their sea covers against illegal fishers.
She also said her willingness to give legal fishing gears to provide environment friendly fishing tools as an effort to ensure protection and preservation of the marine resources in the area. -Northernforum.net
