Cagayano Cadet drowns in PMA swimming pool

While the Cagayan province was suffering from the flood inflicted by the wrath of Typhoon Quiel, the body of the 20-year old Cadet Fourth Class Mario Telan Jr. was found lifeless 15 feet under water at the deep end of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) swimming pool yesterday, November 8.

‘Kuset’, his family would call him, who came from the ‘peanut capital of the north’ was a kind, responsible, respectful, and an intelligent boy. He was the youngest out of the four children of two farmers. He was carrying his father’s name and wanted to be a Math Professor after being inspired by one of his teachers. His dreams to rise his family out of poverty was all he ever wanted.

According to his cousin, Kuset graduated from Lemu National High School (LNHS) in Enrile, Cagayan, where he served as the Supreme Student Government President for three years. Mario Jr. then took Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education at Cagayan State University-Andrews Campus.

After a year, he braved the PMA examination hoping to pass. It was never his intention to join the academy at Baguio City, but when he passed, he took the opportunity to enter. There, he became classmates with Cadet Fourth Class Darwin Dormitorio who died last September 18 from wounds and injuries caused by series of beatings during his hazing.

The 20-year old cadet is the third one to die since September next to Cadet Second Class Cedrick Gadia who died from Esophageal cancer at the Armed Forces of the Philippines Hospital.

According to an Inquirer article, police investigators did not see signs of foul play, said Police Col. Allen Rae Co, Baguio police director. Cadet Telan was found by his classmates who searched for him after failing to return from his 11am swimming class.

“Efforts were done to revive him and he was immediately transferred to Fort del Pilar Station Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician,” said Captain Cheryl Tindog, PMA spokesperson.

Kuset’s mother and other relatives are currently in Baguio City to fetch the remains of Kuset and to review the closed-circuit television footage of the incident. According to her cousin, his body will be brought home next Monday.

Ranhilio Callangan Aquino, Vice-President for Finance and Administration of Cagayan State University where the late Cadet studied for a year, posted on his Facebook account calling for a ‘no holds barred investigation’.
