The upcoming concert of Claudio Baglioni, part of his tour titled Grand tour – La vita è adesso, is generating a buzz for more than just the music. Scheduled for September 27 in the picturesque setting of Lampedusa, this performance promises to be a memorable one, but it has also sparked a heated debate among local residents. As excitement builds for the free concert, discussions about the substantial costs involved have taken center stage, leaving many to question the financial implications of such a grand event.
The total cost for Baglioni’s appearance is estimated to exceed a staggering 800,000 euros, as detailed in a municipal decree issued on August 5. This revelation has ignited a lively discourse among citizens. According to reports from Open, the event has been organized by Friends and Partners Spa, the exclusive promoter for Baglioni’s concerts in Italy, without a public bidding process. The financial breakdown reveals a base cost of 646,721 euros, which, when adding a 10% VAT and 100,000 euros for necessary structural interventions, brings the total well above the initial figure. However, Lampedusa’s mayor, Filippo Mannino, assures residents that the municipal budget will remain untouched, as funds for the concert are sourced from state and regional financing, specifically aimed at the project L’isola, i giovani e il futuro.
The local administration has ambitious plans, intending to transform the concert into a three-day festival filled with cultural and educational activities, with Baglioni’s performance serving as the highlight of the event. Mayor Mannino emphasizes that the artists, including Baglioni, will not receive any payment from the concert proceeds, as the funds primarily cover production costs and compensation for those involved in organizing the event.
Despite the excitement, many locals remain skeptical about the potential benefits of this initiative. The association Obiettivo Pelagie has criticized the financial commitment as "excessive," particularly given the town’s pressing needs, such as renovating the medical facility on Linosa Island, road maintenance, and support for students studying away from home. Stronger criticism comes from Caterina Greco, the former director of the Salinas Museum, who described the promotion of the free concert as “mocking,” given the substantial expenses already committed by the municipality.
Regardless of the controversy, this event will undoubtedly strengthen the connection between Claudio Baglioni and Lampedusa. The island has been a significant location for the artist, as he has been hosting the O’Scià festival there for the past decade, fostering dialogue among the diverse cultures of the Mediterranean.
"I am thrilled to start not from a well-known venue like a beautiful theater or a natural park, but from an extraordinarily beautiful island, also significant for its history," Baglioni remarked in June. As the tour approaches, whispers of the artist potentially stepping back from the limelight linger, yet his words continue to ignite hope among his devoted fans.
