Cristiano Ronaldo has recently reached a significant milestone, turning 40 years old this past February. Just a few months ago, he seemed far from contemplating the end of his illustrious football career. However, in a surprising revelation during an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan, he hinted that the moment of retirement may not be as far off as many had thought. This candid talk has sent shockwaves through the football community, leaving fans both stunned and reflective about the future of one of the game’s greatest icons.
Ronaldo opened up about his thoughts on retirement with a mix of honesty and introspection. When Morgan pressed him on when he plans to hang up his boots, he responded, “I will retire soon. But I think I will be ready. It will be tough, of course. It will be hard, yes. I will probably cry… It will be very, very difficult, but I have been preparing for my future since I was 25, 26, or 27 years old. So I believe I will be able to handle this pressure.” His words, reported by La Repubblica, reveal the weight of the decision that looms ahead.
As he continues to chase the ambitious goal of reaching 1,000 career goals while playing for Al Nassr, Ronaldo also reflected on the emotional challenge of stepping away from the pitch. “Nothing can compare to the adrenaline rush you get from scoring a goal. That will eventually fade, but everything has a beginning and an end. I think I will be prepared, but I have other passions.”
Looking beyond football, Ronaldo shared insights into his family life and future aspirations. He indicated that once he retires, he will dedicate more time to his loved ones, particularly his three-year-old daughter, Bella. “I will have more time for myself, my family, and Bella. When I’m away for long periods, I feel a bit rushed. I want to keep an eye on Cristiano JĂºnior, because at this age, they do silly little things, which is normal. I did the same.”
Next year, barring any unexpected developments, he is set to participate in the World Cup with Portugal. Although the celebration for their qualification was postponed following a draw against Hungary, Ronaldo and his teammates are currently leading Group F with 10 points. When discussing the significance of the World Cup, he downplayed its importance, stating, “Do I dream of the World Cup? It’s not a dream; it doesn’t define me as a player. Winning a competition over six or seven matches and becoming one of the best in history? Do you think that’s fair?”
Throughout his career, Ronaldo’s achievements have often been evaluated through statistics. “Numbers don’t lie. If you look at football records, Cristiano is at the top of the list. It’s another record. I know my potential. I knew I would reach that number.” In response to claims that his long-time rival, Lionel Messi, is superior, he remarked, “Leo is better than me? I disagree with that opinion. I don’t want to be humble.”
The interview also touched on his relationship with Georgina Rodriguez. Although they are planning to tie the knot, there is no set date for the wedding yet. Confirming some previous rumors, Ronaldo mentioned that they might exchange vows after the World Cup. “I’m not a romantic person… but I’m romantic in my own way. We intend to celebrate it after the cup, with the trophy.”
As for where the wedding will take place, that decision remains open. “We haven’t planned it because she doesn’t like big parties. She prefers intimate gatherings, so I will respect her choices.”
