Every year, the esteemed magazine Global Traveler shines a spotlight on the crème de la crème of the travel and lifestyle sectors through its Leisure Lifestyle Awards. This year, the anticipation has reached new heights as the winners for 2026 have been revealed, and it’s no surprise that Italy has made a remarkable showing. From breathtaking destinations to top-notch services, the awards celebrate the best of the best, and Italy certainly has a lot to offer.

In a thorough survey conducted between August 1, 2025, and January 31, 2026, Global Traveler engaged its readers to identify standout performers across various categories. The survey was not only included with magazine subscriptions but was also actively promoted online and through direct emails to subscribers. This year, only completed questionnaires that surpassed the 50% completion threshold were considered valid, ensuring that the results reflect genuine opinions. Notably, employees of Global Traveler and individuals connected to the travel industry were excluded from participating, further solidifying the authenticity of the awards.

The editorial team expressed their gratitude, stating, “We want to thank our readers, the most experienced travelers we know, for participating in this year’s survey. The winners were chosen by those who travel regularly and strive for the perfect balance.”

Italy has secured multiple accolades in this prestigious event. Among the highlights, it proudly appears twice in the top five for the Best Islands in Europe category. While Santorini in Greece claims the top spot, Ireland takes second place, followed closely by Mykonos. Italy’s stunning islands, Sicily and Capri, round out the fourth and fifth positions, respectively. Capri, in particular, has implemented measures to protect its tourist experience.

The accolades for Italy don’t stop there. The country also ranks among the top five Best Leisure Destinations for Groups. Dubrovnik in Croatia leads this category, with Costa Rica and Los Cabos in Mexico following closely behind. Italy makes a commendable fourth place, just shy of the podium, with Cartagena in Colombia completing the list.

When it comes to historical attractions, Italy secures a respectable fifth position internationally, trailing behind Egypt, Spain, Turkey, and Greece. Furthermore, the country is featured in the Best Weekend Destinations in the World, with Rome taking second place, just behind Bermuda and ahead of Paris, Dublin, and Lisbon.

Lastly, Italy makes a mark in the Best International Ski Destination category. Whistler in British Columbia is ranked first, followed by St. Moritz in Switzerland. Cortina d’Ampezzo proudly snags the bronze medal, outperforming Niseko in Japan and Gstaad in Switzerland, which hold the fifth and sixth positions, respectively.

As the awards highlight, Italy continues to enchant travelers with its diverse offerings, ensuring that it remains a top choice for adventurers and leisure seekers alike.
